The Vampire Academy Book Reviews

So, I’ve decided to be more consistent about posting book review here. In celebration of starting that off and (hopefully) being more consistent, I decided that I’d post all six reviews of the Vampire Academy series that I read last year.

Thankfully, I was able to go into reading them with no spoilers or any opinions on the material. They have ended up being in my top three book series of all time!

SPOILERS AHEAD…DUH

Vampire Academy: Five Stars

This book was exactly what I needed. Fast-paced, entertaining, and just the right amount of angsty. I flew through Vampire Academy and am already working on book two.

Rose is a fantastic protagonist. She’s funny, bold, and fiercely loyal to Lissa, which added a great emotional layer to all the action and drama. Lissa wasn’t quite as compelling to me, but her storyline was still intriguing enough to keep me invested.

I really enjoyed Richelle Mead’s take on vampire mythology. I love when authors add their own twist to vampirism, and the Moroi/Strigoi/dhampir system felt unique without being overly complicated. The plot kept things moving and the tone hit that sweet spot between lighthearted fun and genuine stakes (pun intended lol!)

This isn’t a heavy or overly deep book, but it’s not trying to be. And that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable. It’s pure brain candy in the best way. If you’re looking for a quick, addicting vampire read with strong female friendships and a compelling setup for more, Vampire Academy delivers.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves paranormal YA or just wants something you can’t put down.

Frostbite: Five Stars

If I had to retitle this book, it wouldn’t be Frostbite. It would be Cringe Attack, because there were so many moments of secondhand embarrassment, I practically had to read through my fingers. And yet…I devoured it in four hours.

Frostbite raises the stakes in all the right ways. The plot is faster, the threats more intense, and Rose finally starts maturing into the protector we know she is destined to be. Her character development in this book is strong. She’s still impulsive and firey, but there’s a new weight to her choices that makes her arc hit harder.

The real standout for me was the storyline with Rose and her mother. That emotional tension built so well over the course of the book and when it hit, it hit. I cried. Add to that the heartbreak of Rose finally accepting that she and Dimitri can’t be together, and you’ve got a surprisingly heavy emotional punch for a book I frequently called “cringe city.”

The tone definitely darkens in this one, but Richelle Mead handles it well. It never feels heavy-handed or out of place–just more serious, more dangerous, and more real. The humor is still there when it needs to be, and the pacing never lets up.

I’m already into Book 3 and fully hooked. Highly recommend this one if you liked Vampire Academy. The series just keeps getting better.

Shadow Kiss: Five Stars

This book wrecked me in the best, most devastating way. I was absolutely unwell by the end of Shadow Kiss, and even though I had a hunch about where the story might be heading, that didn’t soften the emotional blow one bit.

Rose’s character arc continues to shine. She’s pushed to the edge mentally, emotionally, and physically in this installment, and watching her navigate that pressure was both heartbreaking and empowering. I love seeing how strong and layered she’s become, and how deeply I care about her journey.

The pacing was just as fast and addictive as the first two books, and I flew through it in record time. Every chapter raised the stakes higher, and just when I thought I could breathe–nope. It hit me hard.

There are a few characters whose actions in this book genuinely frustrated me coughLissacough, and it made me all the more protective of Rose. The dynamic between her and Lissa really highlighted how isolated she is becoming and it hurts.

That said, the tone shift is effective. This book is darker, heavier, and more intense than the previous two, but still balanced enough to keep you turning pages without feeling bogged down.

I closed this one and immediately went out to buy the last three. I have no chill anymore. This series has me in a chokehold.

Highly recommend Shadow Kiss to anyone enjoying the series so far. Just be emotionally prepared.

Blood Promise: Five Stars

I am once again completely and utterly unwell. Blood Promise emotionally wrecked me in a quieter, more insidious way than Shadow Kiss and now I’m bracing myself because I know Richelle Mead is going to drag this particular brand of pain out for two more books.

This one definitely takes a slower pace than the first three. Rose’s journey through Russia was emotionally heavy and full of grief, and while I get that, there were moments where she really dragged her feed. Her internal processing made sense, but I still found myself yelling at her to get on with it already. And those long stretches inside Lissa’s head? I now understand why they were there, but at the time…I was annoyed. They broke the momentum in a book that already felt emotionally thick.

That said, Rose is still an incredible protagonist. Her strength, her resolve, and the depth of her heartbreak kept me locked in, even through the slower bits. The scene at Dimitri’s funeral had me in RUINS.

As for Dimitri…I hated him in this book. Which I think was the point. His Strigoi version felt wrong and uncomfortable and icky in a way that was really effective. But still. Ew.

Some bright spots: Abe, Olena, and Dimitri’s grandmother were fantastic additions to the worldbuilding. Those side characters really grounded the Russia storyline.

This book was less about action and more about emotional endurance. It’s eerie, sad, and full of loss, but it’s not hopeless. It sets the stage for something big, and I’m clinging to the idea that Rose is going to rise from this darkness stronger than ever.

Highly recommend, but emotionally prepare yourself. Maybe buy some tissues.

Spirit Bound: Five Stars

I am frustrated. I am distressed. I am binging this series like my life depends on it, and Spirit Bound did not give me a moment to breathe.

First of all: Rose is still my girl. Through and through. No matter how messy or impulsive she get’s, I adore her.

As for Dimitri…I knew he was going to pull the whole “I can’t be forgiven” martyr act after the Strigoin cure, but I’m just so relieved he’s alive. Or…un-Strigoified. Whatever. He can mope in the corner all he wants. Rose isn’t going to let him stay there forever, and honestly? Neither will I.

Lissa is slightly less irritating in this book. Still not my favorite, but at least she started stepping up when it counted. I’ll give her that.

Plot-wise, this book was wild. The mission to find the cure? The actual reversal of Dimitri’s transformation?? And then just when I was starting to exhale-BOOM. Rose gets arrested for murdering the queen. That plot twist came out of nowhere and I am once again, emotionally damaged.

One thing I didn’t love: the Rose/Adrian romance. It felt wrong the entire time. I like Adrian as a character, but there’s no real emotional intimacy between them. It felt like a placeholder for both of them, and I couldn’t stop cringing every time they kissed. He deserves better. So does she.

But overall, Spirit Bound kept the pace fast, the tension high, and the stakes high-key brutal. The emotional and action beats landed exactly how they needed to. I have no idea how this series is going to wrap up, but I’m diving in immediately. (Who cares if I have to work tomorrow LOL)

If I don’t get happy endings in this book…I don’t know if I’ll ever recover.

Last Sacrifice: Five Stars

I have officially reached the end of the Vampire Academy series and I’m overwhelmed in the best possible way. Last Sacrifice is a fast-paced, emotional, and satisfying finale that gave me so many moments I’d been waiting for. While it wasn’t perfect, the good far outweighed the few things that left me wanting more.

First, let’s talk about everything that hit just right.

Rose’s arc was phenomenal. After everything she’s been through across these six books, it was so rewarding to watch her step fully into herself. Not just as a fighter and Lissa’s protector, but as someone who deserves happiness. I was so proud of her.

Dimitri’s journey of forgiveness and healing? Ugh, my heart. Seeing him finally let go of the guilt and love Rose again made all their pain feel worth it. Their reunion, and the fact that they’re reinstated as Guardians, to Lissa and Christian respectively, was the perfect ending for them.

Speaking of Lissa: she really grew on me in this one. I’ve had a rocky relationship with her character, but by the end, I genuinely liked her. She showed maturity, especially after the bond broke, and her relationship with Christina felt strong and earned. They’re a great political power couple, and I’m happy with where they landed.

And I have to shout out the “reveal the real killer” moment near the end. I was very Agatha Christie and so satisfying. That scene had a great tension and payoff, and the way it unraveled was both clever and emotionally charged. It added another layer to the political intrigue and was one of my favorite scenes in the entire book.

Now…on to the parts that left me frustrated.

Adrian. Just…Adrian. I already wasn’t sold on the Rose/Adrian romance, and in this book, it just went downhill. His behavior toward Rose after their breakup was immature and gross, and as Rose pointed out, he’s always playing the victim. I hope he grows in Bloodlines, because right now? He’s a walking red flag.

And while I was happy with the “happy ending,” I really wish we’d gotten a true epilogue. A glimpse into the future, even just a few pages, would have made the conclusion feel more complete. I understand that Richelle Mead was setting up for Bloodlines, but I didn’t want setup. I wanted closure for the characters I’ve grown so attached to.

Still, even with those complaints, I’m giving this a solid 5 stars. It delivered on emotion, action, character growth, and long-awaited payoffs. The themes of loyalty, love, sacrifice, and especially forgiveness were beautifully woven throughout the story.

Highly recommend the entire series to any reader who loves fierce heroines, high-stakes drama, and emotional roller coasters. Now if you need me…I’ll be nursing this wicked book hangover and staring at a wall.

It’s obviously not very hard for me to rate something 5 stars, but there you go! LOL! Hope someone enjoys reading this! <3
